Link Building That Won't Get You Penalised
Links still matter. Google has spent years telling us they matter less, while every ranking study quietly confirms they matter a lot. What changed isn’t whether links count — it’s which links count. The shortcuts that worked a decade ago now get you filtered, ignored, or penalised outright. If you’re still buying packages of “high DA backlinks,” you’re paying to make your site weaker.
This is the honest version of link building. Slower, harder, and the only kind worth doing.
Earning Links vs. Buying Them
There’s a clean line between the two, and Google’s spam systems are built to find it. An earned link exists because someone genuinely thought your page was worth pointing to. A bought link exists because money changed hands and a webmaster typed your anchor text. One survives algorithm updates. The other is a liability sitting on your profile waiting to be devalued.
The trap is that bought links feel like progress. You see numbers go up. But manipulative links don’t build authority — they borrow it, and Google calls the loan in eventually. Earning takes longer precisely because it’s real.
If a link would still be valuable when nobody was looking at your rankings, it’s a good link. If it only exists to move a metric, it’s a risk you’re renting.
Tactics That Actually Work
The methods that hold up share one trait: the link is a byproduct of something genuinely useful, not the goal itself.
- Digital PR. Give journalists and bloggers a reason to cite you — a strong opinion, a timely angle, an expert quote. Coverage brings links that carry real editorial weight.
- Linkable assets. Build the tool, calculator, template, or guide that people reference instead of recreating. If it saves someone work, they’ll link to save their readers work too.
- Original data and research. A survey, a benchmark, an analysis of your own numbers — original data is the most linkable thing on the internet because it can’t be sourced anywhere else.
- Relationships. Real connections with people in your space produce links naturally over years. Unglamorous, but it compounds.
- Unlinked mentions. Someone already named your brand without linking. Find those mentions and ask — it’s the lowest-friction link you’ll ever earn.
If you want this built into a wider strategy rather than treated as a bolt-on, that’s exactly what SEO consulting is for.
What to Avoid (and the Penalty Risk)
Some tactics aren’t just ineffective — they’re actively dangerous. Private blog networks (PBNs), bulk paid links, reciprocal link exchanges at scale, and spammy low-quality directories all leave the same fingerprint. Google’s link spam systems are very good at recognising it.
The downside isn’t neutral. At best these links get devalued and your money evaporates. At worst you collect a manual action or get swept up in an algorithmic hit, and you spend the next six months disavowing links and rebuilding trust instead of growing. The asymmetry is brutal: small upside, catastrophic downside.
Cheap links are cheap because they’re worthless. There is no shortcut that the rest of the internet hasn’t already tried and been caught for.
How to Judge a Link’s Quality
Quantity is a vanity metric. One link from a genuinely relevant, trusted site outweighs fifty from random ones. Before you chase any link, ask:
- Relevance. Is the linking site actually about your topic? A finance link on a finance site means something; the same link on a generic deals blog means nothing.
- Authority. Does the site have real traffic and genuine trust, or just an inflated third-party score?
- Editorial intent. Was the link placed because it helped a reader, or sold in a sidebar?
- Traffic potential. Could this link send you actual visitors? A link nobody clicks is barely a link.
Get those four right and you don’t need many. This same scrutiny is worth applying to anyone you hire — it’s a theme we cover in how to choose an SEO agency.
