How to Choose an SEO Agency (Without Getting Burned)

SEO is one of the easiest services to sell badly. The work is invisible, the timelines are long, and the jargon is thick — perfect cover for agencies that overpromise and underdeliver. If you’re hiring, here’s how to find a real partner.

Red flags to walk away from

  • “We guarantee #1 rankings.” Nobody controls Google’s algorithm. A guarantee like this is either a misunderstanding or a lie.
  • No transparency. If they won’t explain what they’ll do, in plain language, that’s a problem — not a trade secret.
  • Cookie-cutter packages. Real SEO starts with your specific site, market and competitors. A one-size-fits-all package rarely does.
  • Shady link building. Buying links in bulk can get your site penalised. Ask exactly how they earn links.

Questions worth asking

  • Can you show results you’ve driven — ideally something you built yourselves?
  • How will you report progress, and on which metrics?
  • What will you need from us, and how often will we talk?
  • What happens in the first 90 days?

The answers tell you a lot. Good agencies are specific, honest about timelines, and comfortable saying “it depends.”

What a good partnership looks like

The best SEO partners treat your goals as theirs, report honestly even when results are slow, and explain their work instead of hiding behind jargon.

It should feel like an extension of your team, not a black box you pay every month. You should understand roughly what’s happening and why, and see a clear line from the work to your business goals.

Our bias, stated openly

We built and ranked our own product, Portugal Golfe, so the advice we give clients is the advice we follow ourselves. If you’re evaluating partners — us or anyone else — ask the questions above. And if you’d like a free, no-strings audit to see where you stand, we’re happy to provide one.
