Core Web Vitals Explained — and Why They Matter for Rankings
Google has been measuring page experience for years, but most sites still treat it as an afterthought. Core Web Vitals are three signals that quantify how your pages actually feel to a real visitor — how fast they load, how quickly they respond, and how stable they look while doing it. Get them right and you give Google a reason to rank you higher and visitors a reason to stay.
The three metrics, in plain language
LCP — Largest Contentful Paint (loading). This measures how long it takes for the biggest element on screen — usually a hero image or headline — to render. It answers the visitor’s first silent question: is this page actually loading? Aim for 2.5 seconds or less.
INP — Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness). This tracks the delay between a visitor clicking, tapping or typing and the page visibly responding. A laggy button kills trust instantly. Aim for 200 milliseconds or less.
CLS — Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability). This measures how much the layout jumps around as the page loads. You’ve felt it: you go to tap a link and an ad shoves it down the page. Aim for a score of 0.1 or less.
Core Web Vitals don’t measure your server. They measure your visitor’s patience — and patience is the cheapest thing to lose.
Why they matter for rankings and revenue
Core Web Vitals are a confirmed Google ranking factor. They rarely outrank great content on their own, but when two pages compete closely, the faster, steadier one wins. That edge compounds across hundreds of keywords.
The bigger story is conversion. A page that loads in 2.5 seconds keeps far more visitors than one that takes 5. Layout shifts cause accidental clicks and abandoned forms. Sluggish interactions make people doubt whether anything happened at all. Common causes of poor scores
Most failing scores come down to a short list of usual suspects:
- Heavy, unoptimised images. Giant hero images in the wrong format are the number one LCP killer.
- Render-blocking JavaScript and CSS. Scripts that load before the page can paint freeze everything behind them.
- Layout shifts from ads, embeds and fonts. Content that loads without reserved space pushes everything around it.
- Slow hosting and no caching. Even perfect code feels slow on a tired server.
How to fix them
The fixes follow the causes. Compress and resize images, serve modern formats like WebP, and always set explicit width and height so the browser reserves space. Defer or split non-critical JavaScript so the page paints first and hydrates after. Preload your fonts and reserve space for ads and embeds before they arrive. Put a CDN and proper caching in front of everything.
